This was so much fun to make, and it shows. While writing the material, the styles of the songs were different, but all were very organic. The only exception… “Love You More Tomorrow”, which really had no choice but to be an American Idol type of pop ballad. But it’s one of my better songs, so here it is.
With the organic writing came the desire to do a natural sounding recording. Real instruments, with few drum samples or keyboard fx. Some incredible musicians helped out with this. I wanted them to stretch out and impress me. Well, boys and girls, I’m more than impressed. I’m blessed.
I wanted to make a CD that had no limits or preconceptions. You’ll hear Rock, folk, blues, singer/songwriter, classic r&b, pop, country, and all kinds of other influences here. Yes, my roots are showing. J
This collection is not autobiographical. They are more like…human nature stories. There are factual elements to all of them. But let’s call them “based on a true story”, VERY loosely based, mind you…
The past year of writing and recording has been a real joy for me. I hope you have as much fun listening as I’ve had making it. Be Blessed.
TYPICAL MALE
Drums: Tony Morra
Bass and Vocals: Joe
Guitar: James Mitchell
Keys: Mike Rojas
Percussion: Tom Roady
Backing Vocals: Jason Eskridge, Nirva Ready, Missy Hale
I don’t really think I’m a typical male, but… J. This tune was inspired by my friend Frank Conway at Audio One. While showing me a brand new giant Hi-Def TV, turned it on and found a pretty steamy movie scene on. Without missing a beat he said, “60 inches of Love, baby”. Thanks Frank. You rock. The gang rocked this one too…
THESE DAYS
Drums: Bill Bliestine
Bass, Rhythm Guitar, Wurly: Joe
Lead Guitar: James Mitchell
B3: Paul Hollowell
Percussion: Tom Roady
Saxophones: Joe McGlohon
Backing Vocals: Jason Eskridge, Nirva Ready
This is to anyone who thinks the good times are in the past. I believe my best times are still to come. I hope and pray your best years are ahead of you.
HARDER SIDE OF NEARLY EVERYTHING
Drums: Tony Morra
Bass and Guitars: Joe
B3: Paul Hollowell
Percussion: Tom Roady
Backing Vocals: Jason Eskridge, Nirva Ready
Bridge Electric Guitar: James Mitchell
The main line was inspired by a friend. It is a fictional story, though I think we have all had these kinds of times. The trick is to not lash out at others while we’re there.
INSIGNIFICANT Piano and Vocals: Joe
Piano Tuner: Brent Arledge
Maybe this is autobiographical. The music business can be a very strange profession…
BOO’S TUNE (Let Me Tell You About My Man)
Drums: Tony Morra
Bass, Guitars, Rhodes: Joe
Dobro: Al Perkins
Percussion: Tom Roady
Collar Shake in Bridge: Boo Radley.
While reclining one day with my dog Boo in my lap, I told him I needed another song for my CD. He said, “I got one”, and even shook his collar in just the right spot! Good dog.
OVER MY HEAD
Drums: Bill Bliestine
Electric Guitar: James Mitchell
Keys: Paul Hollowell
Percussion: Cathy Chalmers
Bass, Acoustic Gtr: Joe
I’ve always loved this Fleetwood Mac song. I hope you have been in love like this...
LOVE YOU MORE TOMORROW Writers: Joe Hand and Bob Halligan
Drums: Tony Morra
Elec Guitar: James Mitchell
B3: Mike Rojas
Percussion: Cathy Chalmers
Backing Vocals: Jason Eskridge, Nirva Ready
Bass, Acoustic Guitar, Piano: Joe
This was inspired by a traveling preacher who concluded a service with “I hope you love God more tomorrow than you do today.” Though I’ve turned it into a straight up love song, the Spirit remains. It’s also the only co-write on the CD. Thanks to master songsmith Bob Halligan for helping with the bridge on this one. It’s a winner.
DAY AFTER THE PARADE
Drums: Tony Morra
Harmonica: Bruce “Creeper” Kurnow
Piano: Scott Goudeau
Fretless Bass, Guitars, Keys: Joe
This is my favorite song on the CD. On a recent trip to New Orleans, I woke up very early to walk down St. Charles Ave, Thursday after Fat Tuesday. The place was trashed. The first verse is exactly how it looked. The rest of the tune was inspired by a columnist there (likely still hung over) who asked himself “why do I keep doing this to myself year after year?” and promised to change… next year, of course.
IT WORKS FOR ME
Drums: Tony Morra
Percussion: Tom Roady
Strings: Jonathan Yudkin
Bass, Keys, Elec Gtr, Vocals: Joe
It took me years to learn the answers to the 2 most dangerous questions a woman can ask: “How do I Look?” and “What are you thinking?” Here are the safest answers…
MAKE ME LATE TO WORK AGAIN

LYRICS
Typical Male
I’m a typical male yeah
Listen to me now while I
tell you a story ‘bout a
beautiful lady she was
oh so lovely made my
hair stand straight up and I
stood quite straight up and I
sucked my gut in
She said, “hi, I’m Candy, are you
feeling alright now cause you
look kinda funny like you’re
gonna have a baby.” And I
cracked up laughin’ now I’m
totally smitten what a
typical male, I fall so easily in love
yes I’m in love
I’m in love
Yes I’m in love
And I’ve never felt this way before…
I’m a typical male yeah
you still with me? Good!
I’ve got a story of a
beautiful lady she had
Four hundred horses under a
fire engine red dress with
Fine, fine leather
that only comes from overseas
She said, “Hi I’m Candy, are you
ready to ride now cause you
Look like the kind of man that will
fit me to a T.” and I
Cracked up laughin’ now I’m
totally smitten I’m a
Typical male, I fall so easily in love
yes I’m in love
I’m in love
Yes I’m in love
And I’ve never felt this way before…
You can say I’m careless I don’t mind
But a man ain’t a man
unless he’s left half his brain behind
I’m a typical man yeah just
one more story of a
Beautiful lady who
caught me in a store she was
The kind of woman I could
put on a pedestal just
Pure eye candy and I
had to take her home
She was Five foot nothing with a
frame so slender, I could
Watch her for hours she’s a
picture perfect screen!
and I’m in love …
THESE DAYS (Are Fading Fast)
The music of the new generation does very little for me
The music of my generation does even less
But when I hear the sound that came before me
The angels carry me away
To better times and far better places
What I would give to hear those days
The wheels of the new generation hold very little for me
The box cars of my generation were even worse
But when I see the ones that came before me
I wish they’d carry me away
To better times and far better places
What I would give to ride those days
But they’re gone… those days are gone
Sand at the bottom of the hourglass
Yes they’re gone… those days are all gone
And these days are fading fast
Guess it’s true all things must pass
Yes these days… are fading fast
But when I think of the people that went before me
I wish they’d carry me away
To better times and far better places
What I would give to live those days again
But they’re gone… those people are gone
Sand reached the bottom of their hourglass
Yes they’re gone… those days are all gone
And these days are fading fast
Guess it’s true all things must pass
Yes these days… are fading fast
I miss hearing the horns blow
On good ol’ AM radio
And I miss my goombah Joe…
Harder Side of Nearly Everything
Another week down
and I’m up when I should be sleeping
I’m feeling down
must be the company I’m keeping
alone again and again
can anyone out there feel what I’m sayin’
I’m missing my friend
and I wonder why I’m hanging on the
Harder side of nearly everything
Another night down
and I’m up again at the crack of noon
Caffeine goes down
my heart could use a pick me up too
The SUN is my shadow today
now if I could only find my shades
I’m missing my friend
and I wonder why my sun is shining on the
Harder side of nearly everything
Since you, nothing has gone smoothly
Post-you, I don’t know what I’m breathing for
If I could have just one wish
I’d wish you through my front door
And into my empty arms…
My empty and reaching arms…
Another hour down
my mood is minute to minute
I’m tired of down
and my world without you in it.
I’m missing my friend
Though I miss you my friend
I hope you never find yourself on the harder side…
INSIGNIFICANT
I’m believing more and more in the path of least resistance
Or maybe I’m just tired of swimming upstream…
I’m layin’ down my sword, my armor plated passions
Choosin’ fewer battles now in favor of a dream
How lovely insignificance feels.
A single grain of sand on the ocean floor
How lovely insignificance feels now.
less in life is more, yeah.
I’m believing less and less in the power of persuasion
Or maybe I’m just tired of people leading me down
I’m an advertiser’s nightmare, the worst they’ve ever found
Lucky for all of them there aren’t many of me around.
I won’t look over shoulder, I won’t be turning round
Life may be pursuing me, but hope is where I’m bound
How lovely insignificance feels
A single grain of sand on the ocean floor
How lovely insignificance feels, yeah.
Less in life is more.
Everybody wants to be someone special
Not me, I really want to be
insignificant.
A single blade of grass on the open plains
A single hair on a shaggy dog.
Boo’s Tune
Patience shorter than my hair
What was that noise over there?
I’ve sat and watched you work all day
Can we go out and play?
Let me tell you about my man
No one throws a chew toy like he can
Warm sun shining on cool hard wood
Naptime never felt so good
Impromptu meal on the kitchen floor
Can I please have some more?
Let me tell you about my man
No one rubs my belly like he can
Chasing down a rabbit, a squirrel up a tree
Visiting my girlfriend who lives across the street
Headed ‘round the bases
Not-so-straight for home
where even if I’m left alone
I know a man can’t make it on his own for long…
Let me tell you about my man
No one shares an easy chair like he can
Man, man, man!
LOVE YOU MORE TOMORROW
Words by Joe Hand
Music by Joe Hand/Bob Halligan
There is light where there was darkness
A new sky is up above me, my heart begins to beat again
skeptic for the moment, now caution to the wind.
your beauty has evaporated doubt in me and
I’m in love with you now…
I want to LOVE you more tomorrow than I ever did today
Because I need you more than fish need water or flowers needing rain
I want to bathe in every breath you breathe, you can show me how
I want to LOVE you more tomorrow, than I ever could now.
I can’t remember life before you
just old pictures of my past, corners wrinkled and fading fast
an older face is in my mirror, weary from the fight.
My hands are scarred from holding on to things that were not right but
Now you are holding me…
I want to LOVE you more tomorrow than I ever did today
Because I need you more than fish need water or flowers needing rain
I want to bathe in every breath you breathe, only you can show me how
I want to LOVE you more tomorrow, than I ever could now.
Surrendered to your voice, there is no better choice than you
Love clears my clouded mind, once lost I now am finding you
I want to LOVE you more tomorrow…
DAY AFTER THE PARADE
Green and Purple and Gold
Reflect their royal splendor on an old… pizza box
The locals return to town
The morning fog a foot above uneven ground
The barricades are pushed away
Reminders of festivities will last all 40 days
Sidewalks smattered with bottles of memories
Rhythm of the city servants picking up the streets
On the day after the parade
Green and Purple and Gold
Hanging on my old beat up hard headboard
and from my rear view mirror I see
hair of brown and the back of your jeans
You’re in for a fight when I can stand up
For the moment I’m stayin’ down, down.
In my bedroom littered with bottles of memories
Rhythm of my head beating mercy, mercy me.
On the day after the parade
Fog is lifting on the mess I’ve made
The day after the parade
Madness is party to a fine line
And I’ve crossed it over three thousand times
Promises again and again I’ve made
On the day after the parade
I promise I’ll change, I promise to behave
The day after the parade
IT WORKS FOR ME
The way you look tonight
Makes the stars dimmer to my sight
Your love is beaming for the whole world to see
“how do I look?” you say
to my eyes the angels all turned gray
my heart is beating you’ve set my love free
Wherever we are goin’
it doesn’t matter much to me
if it has you,
then baby, it works for me
the way you look tonight
no fire has ever burned so bright
your smile is melting my very soul down
“what are you thinking?” you say
I try to speak but my words got carried away
Cause I know I’m the envy of every man in town
Wherever we are going
Doesn’t matter where we’ll be
If it has you,
then baby, it works for me.
MAKE ME LATE TO WORK AGAIN
A buzzer gets me conscious
Coffee maker’s on
I may be horizontal
But my sleep is sorely done
A new day, an adventure
Made mostly of routine
But lying still beside me
In my kingdom is my queen
Not much today will thrill me
But on you I can depend, darlin’
Make me late to work again.
The boss may make a wise crack
But my smile will stay on
Before I trade more time for money
Our job here isn’t done
Not much today will thrill me
But on you I can depend, darlin’
Make me late to work again.
My body may be runnin’
Through the list of things to do
But my mind will be in heaven
Still wrapped around in you… |
